Product Description
The Deglazing Tool uses a vacuum cup and lever to pry nonporous materials,
such as mirrors and windows from its installation point as follows: A manual
pump removes air from between a rubber pad and the contact surface; a red
line on the pump’s plunger serves as a vacuum indicator; check valve allows
the user to repump the pad without removing it from the contact surface; and
a release mechanism allows the pad to disengage completely. A pry bar and
pressure pad provide leverage to pull the material from its installation point.
Environmental Conditions
Use on clean, relatively smooth, nonporous surfaces, at temperatures from 10°
to 120° Fahrenheit [-12° to 49° Celsius]. Moisture or contaminants can reduce
the slip resistance of a vacuum pad. A red-line indicator may not perform
reliably at elevations above 5000 feet [1524 meters]; see MAINTENANCE:
Service.
ASSEMBLY and SET-UP
1) The Deglazing Tool comes fully assembled and ready to use.
Note: An optional 18-inch [45.8 cm] wide-base pressure pad can replace the
standard 4¼-inch [10.8 cm] pressure pad by removing the cotterless hitch
pin, exchanging the pressure pads and replacing the cotterless hitch pin.
Using the wide-based pressure pad allows the pressure to be distributed
over a larger surface area, preferably over more than one stud or support
beam.
OPERATION
To Attach
1) Clean the mounting surface and, if needed, the face of the vacuum pad (see
MAINTENANCE: Cleaning).
CAUTION: Test the Vacuum Pad and Pressure Pad for staining or
deformation on surfaces with light colors or soft coatings.
2) Orient the pressure pad over a stud in the wall or at a location which will not
bend, depressed or otherwise become damaged by the pressure resulting
from prying on the handle.
3) Position the vacuum pad on the nonporous surface close to the adhesive
or mastic location by loosening the thumb screw and sliding the vacuum
cup along the bar and tighten the thumbscrew. Make sure the plunger
can be seen by the operator, in case the red line should appear while the
Deglazing Tool is in use.
4) Pump the plunger until the vacuum pad attaches completely and the red
line is hidden. The Deglazing Tool is now ready for use. Check the plunger
frequently to make sure the vacuum cup remains securely attached. If a
red line appears, pump the plunger until the red line is hidden again (see
WARNINGS).
5) Pull on the pry bar with increasing pressure until the adhesive or mastic
begins to let go.
Note: Jerking on the pry bar may cause the rapid release of the adhesive or
mastic resulting in damage to the product or injury to the operator.
5) Reposition the pressure pad and vacuum cup as necessary to completely
remove the object from its xture.
To Release
1) Secure the Deglazing Tool, to prevent it from falling when the vacuum cup
is released.
2) Use the vacuum release mechanism to disengage the vacuum cup: press
the valve release lever until the vacuum cup disengages completely.
MAINTENANCE
Service
Since aging and wear reduce the capacity of the rubber vacuum pad, it should
be replaced at least once every 2 years or whenever damage is discovered
(see Inspection).
If the vacuum cup does not function normally (see Inspection), the face of a
vacuum pad may be dirty or the vacuum cup may require service. First clean
the pad face according to the directions to follow. If the condition persists,
contact an authorized dealer or visit www.powrgrip.com for assistance.
Cleaning
1) Remove the air lter from the face of the vacuum pad.
2) Use a clean sponge or lint-free cloth to apply soapy water or another mild
cleanser to the pad face; see WARNINGS and www.powrgrip.com for more
information. CAUTION: To prevent liquid from contaminating the pump,
hold the pad face-down or cover the suction hole in the lter recess.
3) Wipe all residue from the pad face.
4) Allow the pad to dry and reinstall the air lter.
Inspection
Examine and test the vacuum cup regularly to make sure it does not exhibit
the following faults:
• cuts or damage to sealing edges of rubber pad.
• cracks or dents in handle, weldment or pump.
• red line appears soon after attaching the vacuum cup.
• sluggishness or dramatic changes in pump action.
• excessive glaze or stiffness of rubber vacuum pad.
• air lter missing from pad face.
Correct any faults before using the Deglazing Tool (see Service).
Storage
Store the Deglazing Tool in a clean, dry location out of direct sunlight. Protect
the vacuum pad from damage using the cover or another appropriate means.
WARNINGS
Failure to observe WARNINGS could damage the devise, or cause injury to
the user.
Never place the face of a vacuum pad against surfaces which could damage
a sealing edge.
